UAE gutters accumulate a different mix of debris than gutters in temperate climates. In most of Europe and Australia, the primary source of gutter blockage is fallen autumn leaves — the seasonal nature means an annual autumn cleaning addresses the problem. UAE has no deciduous tree season, so leaves are not the primary UAE gutter blockage cause. Instead, UAE gutters primarily accumulate: desert dust and fine sand — UAE's frequent dust events (haboobs) deposit significant quantities of fine sand in every exposed horizontal surface, including gutters. This sand forms a compacted layer at the gutter base that progressively reduces the drainage bore. Over 2–3 years without cleaning, the sand layer can completely block the gutter outlet. Bird nesting material — crows and sparrows commonly nest in UAE building eaves and use gutters as a protected nesting site. A bird nest in a gutter outlet is the most sudden complete blockage pattern — the gutter functions normally until the nest suddenly appears and blocks it. Date palm and tree litter — UAE's planted date palms, ghaf trees and ornamental trees shed fronds, seed clusters and bark that accumulate in gutters.
