UAE gutter design differs from European gutter design in one fundamental way: UAE rainfall events are infrequent but intense. The March 2024 rainfall event delivered 254mm in 24 hours in some areas of Dubai — a volume that European gutter sizing tables would specify as a 1-in-100-year event. UAE gutter systems must be sized for this extreme rainfall intensity rather than for average rainfall rates, because a gutter sized for average European rainfall conditions will overflow during even moderate UAE rain events. This means larger gutter profiles (125mm half-round or 100mm square section as minimum) and downpipe sizing (100mm minimum) than the 75–100mm systems common in European residential construction.
Material selection for UAE gutters: UPVC gutters are the most cost-effective and low-maintenance option for UAE residential properties — they do not corrode, do not require painting, and handle UAE UV and heat exposure acceptably with UV-stabilised formulations. Service life 20–30 years. Aluminium gutters are more rigid than UPVC (important in the large spans of UAE villa eaves), lighter than steel, and powder-coated in any RAL colour to match the building. Service life 25–40 years. Stainless steel gutters are specified for coastal properties and industrial applications where salt air or chemical resistance is required. They are the most expensive but the most durable option. Service life 40+ years.
Accurate measurement of all roof eave runs and downpipe positions; calculating the required gutter profile size based on the roof catchment area and UAE design rainfall intensity; fixing fascia brackets at the correct gradient (5–6mm fall per metre of gutter run) using stainless steel fixings into the fascia board or concrete soffit; installing gutter sections with sealed joints using EPDM seals and mastic; fitting outlets, unions and stop ends; installing downpipes from each outlet to ground level with a discharge point to the stormwater drain or soak-away; and a water flow test using a hose to verify gradient, joint integrity and drain discharge performance. All above-ground work performed from ladder or scaffolding with harness PPE where required by UAE HSE regulations.
