The walk-in shower — a completely step-free, open shower area with no tray or screen boundary — is the most popular shower upgrade in UAE apartments. The appeal is clear: it creates a bathroom that feels larger, eliminates the maintenance problems of shower tray seals and screen pivots, and is easier to clean. The technical requirements for a UAE walk-in shower installation: the entire floor area must be waterproofed with a tanking membrane applied in two coats before any tile adhesive or tiles are laid; the floor must slope uniformly to the drain at a gradient of 1:60–1:80 (enough to drain freely but not enough to feel sloped underfoot); a linear drain or wetroom drain must be installed at the correct floor level; and the shower mixer and head supply must deliver adequate flow at the temperature and pressure required without cooling the surrounding bathroom tiles excessively.
Shower screen glass in UAE properties is exposed to extremely hard water — the scale deposits on shower glass are one of the most common client complaints in UAE bathrooms. Frameless glass with a nano-coating (DealerSign, EnduroShield or equivalent) dramatically reduces scale adhesion and keeps shower glass clear with simple weekly squeegee use. Freestanding baths require specific plumbing planning because the waste and water supply connections emerge from the floor beneath the bath rather than from the wall. This requires floor supply connections that must be planned before floor screeding — retrofitting floor-supply connections in a tiled floor requires cutting channels in the screed and tiles, which is costly and disruptive. We always advise clients who plan a freestanding bath to confirm the decision before the bathroom floor is tiled, not after.
Built-in alcove baths (the conventional bath set into a tiled alcove with a side panel) are simpler to install because all connections are made through the end or side panel. However, the bath panel in UAE hard water environments develops scale deposits at the bath waste connection point — the acrylic or fibreglass of the panel cracks around the waste fitting over time from the combination of thermal cycling and hard water mineral deposition. When a UAE alcove bath panel develops leaks at the waste fitting, the correct approach is waste fitting replacement with a fresh silicone seal — not a sealant bead over the outside of the panel which does not address the fitting failure.
